At this address, you can download the Dark Spider document that contains a 4e conversion of the 3e Dark Spiders from Terrors of Athas and DSMCII: the Web Reaper (Minion), Mephiticant (Soldier), Sorcerer (Artillery), Mindshredder (Lurker), and Queen (Controller (Leader)).
You’ll notice it doesn’t contain any indications of damage, level, saves, etc.
I’m seeking feedback on the choice of abilities, how they fit together, and interact with those of other dark spiders. Ultimately, a level is gonna have to be put on each of these monsters, and ranges and squares affected for each of the abilities determined.

At the same address can be found the Jhakar.

Many of the abilities are inspired by or adapted from MM abilities. If anyone has more original input for replacements, let me know.

Updated all of the linked files, plus added the B’rohg (brute, elite brute), Gith (minion, skirmisher, controller, elite skirmisher), Human Templar (controller (leader)), and Half-Giant Guard (brute).

I was thinking about making a list of the average brute/controller/ etc /etc hp totals of the monsters and break them down into a list, same with anything else that might benefit from that. Dunno if thats worth it but it might give the monster designer/builder a guideline to go by when determining hp of monsters. Hd and levels from earlier editions might be used to determine monster levels.
Anybody interested in that sort of thing?

It’s probably all been done over at ENWorld’s and WotC’s forums. If you could search for the info there, and link to your findings, that would be even more useful. I tried to find such info with no success, but people keep hinting at it in their posts.

Ahh kk, guess i should get off my ass, and go learn something outside this forum

A lot of people posting on some of the other forums are using these scripts/programs:
http://www.asmor.com/scripts.php
The monster maker for one and the monster math cruncher seem useful.

I don’t see the usefulness for that generator, as you get the same answer and in about the same time by hand anyway. Also, what’s found in the DMG in terms of damage per level is not always the same as found in the MM for an equivalent monster. There’s lots of winging it and page turning to compare monsters to yours.

I’m currently writing the big bad for my adventure, a defiler (level 8 elite controller). Have any ideas on cool spells?

I tried to Down load the files from the top link, but they links keep stalling out.

So if i knew a little more about the scenario id be glad to help. Yancke@gmail.com if you need help.

Avatar pennarin 193 posts

It doesn’t stall for me. I’m using Firefox and am registered to ENWorld… When I download it’s instantaneous.

Added the Gaj.
Right now there are several encounters in which the PCs have to fight:
- Several gith parties in different places and times, culminating in the eradication of the gith’s lair and its leaders, a group of belgois and a gaj (elite).
- A b’hrog and its rager mate (elite), and their several jhakar pets.
- Decrepit skeletons, skeletons, and blazing skeletons.
- Dark spiders, their Grayfouled queen (elite), and her undead dark spider chitin rotters (minions).
- An army group (human bandits, human guards, half-giant soldiers) led by a dwarf templar enforcer.
- The final encounter with the big bad, a myrmeleon agent of the sorcerer-kings, protected by another army group (like above) led by half-elf templar knights and a human templar commander.
- Plus a couple of random encounters.

What’s the name of the thread at enworld?

Avatar pennarin 193 posts

The adress is linked up in the first post. Thread’s name is 4E Dark Sun adventure: Legacies of War. It’s out of date, though, since no one cared much for it (strange, for people interested in DS conversions).
I can send you the stuff though email, if you like. Ping me at pennarin@gmail.com

Mmm. I downloaded the docs, thanks! (I was at work before, so it was blocked.) Anyway, a lot of the numbers aren’t there. Did I get old versions? Or you can send them to me at the email address I sent you.

Thanks!

Sent by email, then.
Yes, many if not most monsters I made do not have numbers, because the exact level they should be at is linked to the level of the PCs, since I’m making these monsters for an adventure, and the PCs’ level is not yet set in stone.

Ah, okay.

I have looked at a few but not in detail yet. It’s interesting because it’s tough to say what tier these monsters should be, when 2E was so different from 3E. Maybe what we, not us two per se, need to do is figure out what level the monsters need to be and go from there.

For example, what tier should the Gaj be? Heroic? Paragon? Should there be epic level dangers other than the SKs?

I find some monsters easy, such as Gith, Tembo and others but not all of them. Again, once we figure that out, the stats should be easy.

Penn: I apologize that I haven’t gotten back to you on your monsters. My own creation of monsters took a back seat for several reasons, mainly being that I am not playing DND or Dark Sun at the moment. And I am working on maps and campaign ideas first. I do hope to get back to monsters at some point.

Penn: I don’t know what my group is going to choose but it looks like the current story/campaign is going to wrap up next week. If we end up going with Dark Sun, I will be more active and start converting more monsters! If not, I won’t work on this for the obviously reasons.
