While working on the Morg, and developping the Namech as a sideline, I thought the Namech – like many other undead – will now be a minion. Namech in 3e had class levels, so this is now out of the question.


So how do you inject uniqueness into 4e undead that now have to be generic?
Well, developping something like chapter 3 of Terrors of the Dead Lands, with all its customizable undead abilities, is a start.


I also thought, why not make one of those abilities be Soul Remnant: “The creature keeps a at-will power, stats recalculated to take into consideration the creature’s new level. An inflicted condition that is now too powerful for the creature’s level, such as stun, is downgraded to a less effective one, like daze. If the power had a power source, such as arcane, it no longer has. (Rather, the power is now powered by energies from the Gray.) The power may also have been corrupted in some way, for example no longer inflicting radiant but necrotic damage.”


That way, a Namech can keep some remnant of who it was before becoming undead, and those undead that were once divine casters – druid, cleric, templar – and that lost those powers upon their transformation can now have a remnant of their old divine powers…even if there’s no longer a spirit of the land, elemental entity, or sorcerer-king granting it.

I like the MM basic undead like the Wight may actually be a deathlock wight and theres 5 or 6 skelitons as well. For the time being I would be inclined to use the stats in the MM but maybe changing the physical descrition to make htem fit DS. A Lich for example can just have its appearence changed and yo have a Kaisharga. 4th ed feels a bit incomplete ATM and I was going to out more effort into it once the missing classes and psionics come out.

Actually I considered using the MM undead and renaming them, but it’s lacking. We do need, IMO, to convert the DS undead to 4e.

What I did feel while reading the MM is that we might consider integrating many of the 4e undead into DS, as they are.

Agree about integrating the undead into Athas. Maybe a small writeup on each monster changin the fluff?
