Have any of you guys come up with a system to identify exact individuals through science, magic, or psionics? A fellow gamer used the name “a living registry”. He mentioned maybe using a psi crystal or psionic orb or something.

Even though it’s easy to be stolen into slavery, I think there should be an ultimate legal way to prove weather someone is an escaped slave or not.

Here are some lame examples. Hopefully you guys can improve upon my ideas.

Orb of Identity: When applying for citizenship or doing certain legal stuff, you’re required to submit your identity to the city. You go in, and wait in line. When you get up to the big obsidian orb on a pedastal, you put your hand on it and say “Korgunard of Tyr, freeman”. The orb turns a certain color if you’re telling the truth, or not. If you already registered it will say “Korfunard of Tyr, freeman” for you. If you’ve been freed recently, you touch the thing, and after it says “Rikus of Urik, slave”, you correct it with “Rikus of Tyr, freeman”. As long as you told the truth, and the admins approve, you’re all changed up. I don’t know how the thing works. Maybe it looks at your handprint or something. I picture it being huge though, and what happens if it’s destroyed?

Taste test: You have to prick your finger and give some disgusting creature a taste of your blood. He grins and says “Neeva of Tyr, Slave Ha Ha!”. Again, don’t know how it works. He might be of the new race, or some kind of foul magical creation. He definitely is disgusting with a long tongue.

Superman crystals: used for all kinds of stuff, the superman crystals are little psionic dvds. Some of these are ancient. Some are banned. The Dragon Kings destroyed all the good ones. sometimes though, you find a gem.

Written Records: The only reason I don’t just go with written records is that paper is supposed to be rare on Athas, and I don’t think they’d waste it to keep records. Stone tablets seem like they’d take up too much room.

The spell Slave Scent identifies the social status of the character.

The monitor psychometron, found in the Athasian Emporium, which is used for aura sight and aura reading, can be used by templars and psions working for them to detect the status and more about the visitors to their cities.

There are psi crystals that can copy documentation. Could be something as simple as chalk documentation that is then kept in the psicrystal thus allowing the slate or whatever it is written on to be cleaned.

The Slave Scent and the monitor psychometron bring up interesting points. Does it mean that your caste is magically and fundementally linked to you? How is that done? How could it be undone? That could bring up an epic Tyler Durden adventure, couldn’t it?
