What about Aarakocra?

Has anyone spent any time working things up on the bird folk? For a race that was added into the standard races in the revised rules, it seems that they have gotten little love. Even the Pterrans got the “Pterrans of the Hinterlands” written up by a fan. I have more ideas about what to do with the Tari, and Ssurran than the birds. Maybe I just missed something, but it seems that the bird people have been neglected. |

Well Phil, I found some 2nd Edition information |

Nice find. I hadn’t noticed that portion of the site. Probably just further evidence that even I was ignoring the bird people. The aerial encounters table is nice. |

the bird people are awesome in my opinion lots of chances to roll play the claustrphobia thing in dungeons. fun to play to if you use your imagination. the ability to fly to presesents alot of advantages |

So I spent some time watching large parrots, and thought that Winter’s Nest would be an interesting and horrifying city. Horrifying for anyone who could not fly that is. Everything would be up off the ground, and the ground would almost certainly be just garbage and excrement covered. For some reason I thought of Tari as sort of street sweepers who would attempt to keep up with the filth, but really were there for the shiny bobbles that would most certainly be dropped. Anyone else put much time into what that city would be like? |

As a big fan of the Tari, I like the idea of them as street sweepers in Winter’s Nest. For me the whole place kind of boggles the mind. Its built for fliers, so there aren’t streets per se. Its got to be big enough to house 1000’s of intelligent birds in a real society. So you have the normal needs for recreation, bars, restaurants, or other cultural stuff. Presumably you have classes, so where do the poor live in relation to the rich. Do they have markets and grocery stores? How divided are their labor and trades? Dang birds are frustrating to think about. To me they should be more advanced than the Kenkus described in the Wisdom of the Drylanders, but figuring out which ways is still up in the air. |

Phil, As closed off as the kenku caves are, I expect the Aarakrokra area is wide open. Nests would be most of the living areas, and the higher up you go, the higher in society you would be. As far as places of business, I’d expect circular perches, but because you would still need some sort of storage for foodstuff, but I would think recreation would focus on hunting, and flying (perhaps races). The market would be mainly for things like shiny baubbles, which would be an excellent reason to keep Tari around as they could deal with the other land bound races, and would have no problem digging in and scrounging for items in the holes in the ground. They also provide no real threat as some simple feather ruffling would scare most Tari away. |

Phil, I produced some Tari material for 3.5 awhile back if you’re interested. Created a tari time line detailing a bit of their history and two tari themed prestige classes. |
