I usually run a Forgotten Realms game, but I had introduced one of my players to the Darksun Setting. Because I needed a break from the DM thing he offered to run a Darksun Campaign. Everything was fine for the first few sessions. A little heavy on defilers perhaps but no big deal. Then about five sessions in the party is magically gifted with Adamantine weapons, not just one player, the entire party. And now every enemey faced has some kind of ridiculous DR, that can only be overcome with these Adamantine weapons. My gladiator’s, Heartpick, Talid and other uniquely Athasian weapons are useless. Arghhh

Yeah it seems wrong! Adamantine is known as ‘Dwarven Steel’ on athas and is so rare that a single weapon so forged is equal to a king’s ransom. Since you’re a gladiator, you should be able to best your party if you get the surprise round to act… slay them all for their weapons. Even a lawful good character would consider it… imagine the good all that wealth could bring into the world.
That should bring the party to a truly Athasian storyline. Screw his monsters, they can still die to magic I’m sure… hire a sorcerer king as a bodyguard with some of your earnings. Man…. what a campaign screw that is. I’d consider the campaign already over at this point and find a decent way to end the agony. Make sure you inform him that he didn’t run DarkSun… he ran Forgotten Realms in the Desert.
I so feel your pain! One of my PCs asked at what level they should begin seeing magic items in the game…

Yeah, it rings false.
That DM is playing DS like my 14 yo DM used to when I was his age. High School, you know. 1993 or so.
So he didn’t like the absence or rarity of metal weapons so much for its own sake as for the opportunity it provided him to introduce metal weapons to the players. It goes he’s transforming Athas back into a regular setting.
Are you sure he actually likes DS?
