I would recommend keeping it simple. I just let the Wizard use Sorcerer metamagic (and I scrapped the Sorcerer). Preservers got Careful Spell, Subtle Spell, etc. Defilers got Twin Spell, Empower, etc. So, Defilers get more power. Preservers use magic more carefully. Done. Easy.
