I’d like to find or build a tool that would allow me to upload Dark Sun PDFs and perform queries to retrieve excerpts from those books on specific topics. An example might be a search to return all excerpts where Altaruk is mentioned in the original 2E materials. This would be a tool for me to use as a DM to perform quick research when building adventures.
I’ve had marginal success doing this by building a GPT. The results have very high accuracy, but they’re always just short in one way or another of being complete enough for me to know I’m getting all the information I’m looking for. I’ve had higher degrees of success with deepseek in terms of results, but it can only reference one book at a time. I also don’t mind spending/building/hosting if there is a platform that will work well for this purpose.
Has anyone built something like this? Does anyone have a platform they’d recommend that would work well for this purpose? I do intend to take my question to AI specific forums but wanted to check the community first.
I have one for 3.5e DS. here: ChatGPT - 3.5e Dark Sun Guide. I find that until they change for Chat-Gpt 4 turbo to a newer version. The AI will drift somewhat. You need to double check its work. But it works good enough for me. Later I will convert the PDF’s to JSON format to see if it helps.
I built a similar GPT for the 2E original and revised materials, but I found it regularly omitted results and randomly failed to adhere to specific instructions, such as not to truncate excerpts. Have you achieved better results? I did not tweak my model much.
Yes like I said I did have problems. The AI no matter what model so far, Chat-GPT, Grok, DeepSeek, will go in a different direction then you want them too.
