I agree. Also, bastard sword is an exotic weapon in 3.5e, and the favoured weapons for the Sorcerer Monarchs really should be of the martial type. Short Sword (gladius) should be Andropinis’ favoured weapon.
Yeah Andropinis kind of needs to be short sword.
If repeating weapons is ok, I think short sword could go for both Andropinis and Borys, or spear for both Hamanu and Borys. For those whose Templars canonically have a link to specific weapons (at least Dregoth and Borys), IMO those should be used even if it means repeating weapons.
The seven classic Tyr Region ones can still be unique.
Hamanu is linked with long sword via the Scorcher. His domains strongly suggest long sword too, at least based on frequency matching. I don’t think there is any issue with same favoured weapons . I was thinking short spear for Gulg for forest fighting, but it’s a simple weapon, not a martial weapon. I have some ideas that I will submit here soon.
Gulg could be a bow. Ivory Triangle emphasizes how the Oba culturally favors hunting over agriculture, so I think she needs a hunting themed weapon - so if not a spear, probably a bow (slings are simple weapons I think).
So possibly, combining the above …
Original 7
Balic / Andro - Short sword
Draj / Tek - Macuahuitl
Gulg / L-P - Long bow
Nibenay - longspear? (from the agafari spears used by his royal guard? They’re not Templars though)
Raam / Abalach-re - Dagger
Tyr / Kalak - Long sword ?
Urik / Hamanu - Spear, or maybe one of the Athasian-unique martial weapons like a carrikal
Others
New Giustenal / Dregoth - Longsword
Ur Draxa / Borys - Short sword
Not sure about Eldaarich/Daskinor and Kurn/Oronis. Probably something weird.
This is a very long post that you didn’t write that says essentially nothing.
How about YOU engage with the material?
That’s what I am doing. The post itself is just number crunching and precedent seeking for everyone to see.
Done.

I went into the 2E sourcebooks and novels to see what weapons the templars and soldiers of the city-states were actually using. The judgement calls were the dead Sorcerer Monarchs (or moribund ones, like Sacha and Wyan), and Gulg. Gulg is a special case because no weapon is ever specified. Just that champions use heavy weapons, and the judaga use thursting, piercing weapons. To bridge the gap, I selected the trident, a heavy-ish weapon that can be used both in melee and thrown.
Did Sacha, Wyan, Myron, Irikos etc ever have Templars?
Yes or no depending on when they were connected to the elemental planes to pass energy onto templars. Per the Revised and Expanded Boxed Set by Bill Slavicsek, the answer is no. Borys turned the champions into sorcerer monarchs after they defeated Rajaat. So no.
If you go by what is implied by the Prism Pentad novels, the champions had templar followers from the beginning after being empowered by Rajaat. This is also the scenario in Rise and Fall of a Dragon King by Lynn Abbey. So yes.
The fan canon of Athas.org follows the Revised and Expanded Boxed Set, and also adds “champion” as a separate status with various abilities.
I go with the PP because it makes sense that in the conduct of the war, they would need followers with spellcasting. I also don’t accept that Borys could make anyone into a sorcerer monarch.
I just say all of these guys were leading armies, including many templars. Irikos is from Psionic Artifacts of Athas: his status is of being able to grant spells to templars is unknown in canon, but I decided that since he is the “Left Hand of Rajaat”, he probably was a champion.
I ran where most didn’t have templars until after the rebellion. Getting templars was one of the bribes Borys used to bring everyone on board. Armies were masses of normal people, a lot of psionics, and some arcane magic. Healing could be done by psionics, there’s no requirement for templars.
Knights are normal folks with limited to no magic. They were the elite soldiers of the cleansing war armies.
Warlords are basically mini champions, they were hand picked by the champions to lead in their absence. All were wizards, many were psionic. They were imbued with lesser versions of the Champion abilities for stats, damage reduction, immunities, regen, and gained a signature spells abilities for spell levels of 1-5. Signature spells were “always memorized” and allowed them to channel spell power into those spells. Use of the Dark Lens was a requirement, so this was done sparingly.
Champions are the Athas.org released version. Signature spells operated the same as Warlords but were for spell levels 1-9. In addition they gain Tower Bound and Two as One.
Hands were a step up from Champions, individually created by Rajaat. Their creation didn’t change the sun since they were handled one at a time, it was just doing it all at once that caused that change. Each of them got the full Champion treatment with slightly more powerful stats, damage reduction and regen as well as a second Genocidal Focus, Fire Eyes, Tower Sorcery, Rajaat’s Shield and Rajaat’s Touch. Only Irikos and Myron were made Hands.
Chosen were the top of the foot chain. Everything a Hand got at another step increase, plus a Forced Draconic Transformation. Borys was Rajaat’s test subject for a Forced Draconic Transformation before Hamanu but was a Chosen.
I also use a Student of Rajaat PRC that basically is a supersized Cerebremancer that gave access to all psionic disciples over 10 levels, all the Champions except Abalache-Re and Borys were Students and while Hamanu wasn’t one, Fire Eyes had a ability to drain experiences from those more powerful and used that to basically steal the levels from Myron. Kalak wasn’t a student, but he also was just a warlord, not a champion.
