Life Shaping Handbook, p 103, Behind the Veil

This Behind the Veil mentioned that a northern Rhul-thaun settlement was in a haunted ruin, with the ghosts of psions, druids, and preservers. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

And that this would be expanded upon in a later supplement. :scream:

Did it ever get expanded upon?

Nope. The old team didn’t even leave any notes as to what they were planning - just another unresolved hook for DMs to play with now.

Welp, I’m not particularly creative (too much of a linear thinker), but I lean heavily into the ā€œhopeā€ side of Dark Sun.

So, what if the people in this ruin were a think-tank, trying to come up with ways to fight back against the bad guys?

One project (my personal favorite idea) might have been creating an augmented tree of life. One that does more than passively shield against defiling.

There’s so many spells available to druids and preservers that target defilers specifically. Weaving them into the super tree of life seems an obvious next step. A defiler tries to drain the grove, but is hit with backlash.

Now, this being Dark Sun, hope always has to struggle to survive. This is a ruin, filled with ghosts, occupied by halflings that despise arcane magic and psionics. Not as primitive as forest halflings, but everything is ritualistic. At some point, the village was raided (during the preserver and/or druid purge, or the cleansing wars, or maybe just a band of roving bandits), the inhabitants killed, and the research mostly destroyed (arson, vandalism, or just time).

So, you find a beta example of the augmented tree of life, plus a few other experiments too big to toss into the rubbish heap. There are a few clay tablets with notes, but others are broken into fragments (again, rubbish heap, though a few pieces might have fallen under a lab table).

The PCs would have to assemble what notes and data they can find, then try to find another group that can try to pick up the research. But with the loss of institutional knowledge, having to learn the tech that will let them learn the tech that will let them understand the basics of the notes. (And, no, they don’t know about Kurn. No shortcuts! :winking_face_with_tongue:)

I hear that - I’m usually a pretty linear thinker as well, the creatives in the group always stun me with the amazing stuff they can pull out of thin air…

I, personally, know that I work best as a ā€œtechnicianā€ and ā€œdeveloperā€ā€¦ taking things other people have made an smoothing out the rough edges, or taking an idea someone else had and building it into something else. Creating ex nihilo is not my strong suit.

Yeah, ā€œpolishingā€. Its an important and valuable skill, though sometimes hard to appreciate when its your stuff getting the polishing.

ā€œMy headcanons are true and correct, while yours are just speculative garbage.ā€

Huh, weird - that’s exactly MY policy as well.

Luckily, you two agree in every particular.
