I’d already heard the explanation that Common is the pidgin (or whatever the term is) of the different languages known by slaves, as they move from city to city.
And each city has its own language. With a variety of writing systems.
But I just learned that each trade house has its own language. And nobles have their own languages, too; sometimes, different noble houses in the same city have their own district languages!
That’s a lot of languages!
