Slodak revised third edition conversion

Why slodak is a longsword in second edition and a short sword in third edition?

Looking into to it. May have been an oversight.

And, I’m reviewing 3.5e Core Rulebook, what about dragon ivory? Maybe it’s cheaper than metal? “Weapons crafted from drake ivory cost twice what they normally would” and “Due to the rarity of metal, weapons and other items constructed primarily from metal are priced at their Player’s Handbook listed cost in gp - they are not converted to Cp. For example, a metal longsword costs 15 gp (or 1,500 Cp)”. Does a long sword made of bone cost 15 Cp, a long sword made of dragon ivory cost 30 Cp, and a long sword made of iron cost 1500 Cp??? Is dragon ivory easier to find on the market than iron?

Umm, I’m unclear what you’re referencing. The v8 Rules have this for Drake Ivory.

"Drake Ivory: Drake ivory is extraordinarily strong and easy to work compared to the bone that most Athasian weaponsmiths use. Since it can only be obtained from the claws and teeth of deadly drakes, it is rare, expensive, and forbidden (see drake hide, above). Weapons made from drake ivory cost an additional 2,000 Cp to enchant. Weapons crafted from drake ivory cost twice what they normally would. A double weapon that is only half crafted using drake ivory increases its cost by 50%. For purposes of damage reduction, drake ivory is considered equivalent to cold iron (DMG 284). For weapons affected by the materials rule, drake ivory is considered inferior. Drake ivory has a hardness of 10 and 30 hp per inch of thickness. "

Exactly, it says “Weapons crafted from drake ivory cost twice what they normally would”. What reference should be used: gold or ceramic pieces?

Ah, it was buried in the middle - i must be blind today. :man_facepalming:

I’d imagine its double the cp cost.

I think maybe you’re conflating “availability” with “usefulness”. It says its rare and expensive, but apparently not nearly be expensive as iron or bronze. But, my guess would appear that the old Athas.org team a weapon that is equivalent to cold iron isn’t especially mechanically useful on Athas, so its not very expensive.

Looking into this, it seems it was an initially put into the 3.5 rules document as a 1d6, that was 20 years ago. But it as also propagated as a 1d6 into other 3.5 documents as well. It seems the members of the original team aren’t around to speak to it as to what they did it. Most weapons seem to convert over from one version to the next straight across. Were it me as a DM, I would just allow two versions: a short slodak and a long slodak. With respective dice to match.

FWIW the 1d6 for the slodak is found in the original 2003 DS3 version of the game released by Athas dot org.
