I give up on the Legends of Athas homebrew epic spell seed. It’s just fundamentally unworkable. Instead I’ve decided to use canon epic spell and epic power seeds creatively. By ditching this homebrew seed, I’ve been able to streamline the entire process of creating the spells for the metamorphosis. Here are the first few preserver spells to turn into an avangion.
Preserver Metamorphosis Series of Spells
The Preserver Metamorphosis series of spells charts a transformational journey that is distinctively different from its darker counterpart, the Defiler Metamorphosis. Unlike the defiler’s metamorphosis, which relies on the devastating practice of defiling—brutally draining the life essence from Athas itself—the Avangion Metamorphosis draws upon ambient and cosmic energies, interacting harmoniously with Athas and its celestial environs.
This profound difference in the source of magical energy results in transformations that are significantly different in pace and impact. The Avangion Metamorphosis, aligning with natural and celestial rhythms, occurs gradually, progressing step by step in response to particular cosmological circumstances. The timing of celestial alignments, the passing of comets, and other astronomical phenomena, plays a crucial role in this transformational process. Each of these unique events generates specific energies, which the preserver taps into to fuel their metamorphosis.
This reliance on cosmic and ambient energies means that the preserver’s path is intrinsically slower and more patient, requiring a precise synchronization with cosmic cycles. However, the rewards of this approach extend beyond personal transformation. As these spells interact symbiotically with the world, the preserver’s metamorphosis is not merely non-destructive—it actively contributes to the revitalization of Athas.
Each preserver metamorphosis spell has a prerequisite event that must be met, and isn’t part of the spell construction costs but a prerequisite to the success of the spell.
Preserver Metamorphosis I

Prerequisite Event: Solar Zenith. Happens daily at midday, the point when the sun is at its peak, producing an influx of universal energy. The preserver uses this plentiful energy to initiate their transformation, awakening their true potential. The solar zenith lasts for an hour.
The energy of life swirls around you and begins to infuse your form. The world looks different through your eyes now as you begin your new existence.

This spell initiates your transformation into the transcendent state known as Avangion, signifying your elevation to an advanced being. Depending on your alignment, your creature type alters: if you are good or neutral, you become a fey, gaining low-light vision; if you are evil, you transform into an aberration, acquiring darkvision up to 60 feet. You lose all previous types and adopt all advantages of your new classification. Simultaneously, you gain the trait of an advanced being and begin to accumulate evolution scores. You embark on a unique path, becoming one of the most potent entities on Athas and unlocking the potential to attain salient feats exclusive to advanced beings.
As an advanced being, you acquire immunities to disease, sleep, energy drain, ability drain, paralysis, polymorphing, petrification, or any other attack that alters your form. You also become proficient with your natural weapons. The limitations of mortality no longer bind you: you can no longer die of old age, nor do you suffer penalties to your attributes due to aging. You become self-sustaining, with no requirement to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep.
Also you gain the following Supernatural (Su) abilities at will: tongues, discern lies, detect chaos/evil/good/law, caster level equal to character level. As supernatural abilities, they bypass spell resistance.
This epic spell can only be cast while preserving. The spell must be cast within a specialized focus structure designed specifically for the first three preserver metamorphosis spells, costing no less than 5,000,000 Cp. This focus structure is actually a purified area that has been untouched by defiling, and the cost is made up of the remains (ash, physical remains, artifacts, etc…) of enemies of life. I.e. high-level defilers and the like. Physically you change very little, save possibly gaining slightly more noble features or your eyes may take on a gold or silver sheen.
Your newfound evolution score provides you access to powerful abilities, known as salient feats. Each of these feats amplifies your capabilities beyond the understanding of ordinary beings. As your evolution score increases, so too does your capacity to acquire more of these feats, consistently expanding your formidable array of powers. Each Avangion, though sharing the common title, remains distinct, their transcendence shaping them in unique ways.
Suggested salient feat: immortal grace. Mystical reservoir. Superior species. Superior Skill Mastery.
Preserver Metamorphosis II

Prerequisite Event: Full Appearance of the Guardian Constellation. Occurs once every 10 years when the “Guardian” constellation is fully visible in the night sky. The preserver channels this resonant energy, guiding it to catalyze the next stage of their metamorphosis. The full appearance lasts for a week.
As the energy around joins with you, your skins starts to glow and your hair turns white, you can feel the life force strengthening and protecting you.
This spell must be cast as a psionic enchantment, meaning an epic psionic power slot must be expended in the casting. The spell must be cast within the specialized focus structure designed specifically for the first three preserver metamorphosis spells, costing no less than 5,000,000 Cp.
This spell transforms you into the second stage towards becoming an avangion. At this stage your defensive nature starts to manifest, allowing you to gain a +1 deflection bonus. Finally, you gain the ability to Change Shape (Su) into a small, medium or large creature.
Physically your skin takes on a metallic glow similar to your eyes, and any hair you have turns pure white.

Preserver Metamorphosis III

Prerequisite Event: The Shadow Eye. This alignment happens once every 30 years when certain planets align, creating an optical illusion in the sky. The preserver taps into these energy fluctuations, using them to guide and fuel their transformation. This alignment lasts for about a week.
